HCC Class presents a Multicultural Thanksgiving

HCC instructor Sandra Weden, far left, with Early Childhood Education students

Thanksgiving canít come too early for the students in Halifax Community Collegeís Early Childhood Education 146, a child guidance class for those who plan to work in the early childhood education field. They recently presented a Thanksgiving project that had a multicultural focus.

To complete the project, each student selected a culture and researched how that culture typically celebrates the holiday. They brought different foods, dressed in traditional dress and devised crafts for children. According to instructor Sandra Weden, the exercise was a lesson in cultural sensitivity.

Presentations involved Native American, Hispanic, Cajun, African American, Jewish American and Caucasian cultures. History on each culture was shared. Hands-on activities that could be used to teach children about how different cultures approach Thanksgiving were also part of the presentations.
