State association scholarship established at HCC

The North Carolina Association of Textile Services (NCATS) & ALSCO, Durham, N.C., has established the NCATS Scholarship at Halifax Community College. The scholarship will recognize and promote academic achievement for a student enrolled at HCC who is in need of financial assistance.

The NCATS Scholarship will be awarded to a student who maintains a 3.0 GPA and is enrolled full-time at HCC. Priority will be given to (1) a child of an employee of Halifax Linen, (2) a grandchild of an employee of Halifax Linen, or (3) a relative of an employee of Halifax Linen. Otherwise, the scholarship will be open to the general public. Applicants will need to provide recommendation letters recognizing their citizenship qualities as well as community involvement through volunteer activities or leadership roles. Recipients must also demonstrate financial need.

According to Charles McElheney who is the secretary-treasurer and past-president for the organization, NCATS established 10 scholarships this year. “The state organization wanted to help the communities across the state at 10 community colleges. The total of the gifts was $50,000,” said McElheney. HCC received $5,000 for scholarships.
