In celebration of Halifax Community College's (HCC) 40th Anniversary and Accounting Week, Feb. 26-March 2, two Accounting Program alums' achievements were highlighted. The alumni described what they are doing now and how their careers have progressed since their commencement exercises at HCC.

Ann Cox graduated from HCC's Accounting Program in May 2005. Cox is now employed at Amazing Grace Appraisals, a real estate appraisal office, in Jackson where she is the office manager/bookkeeper. She enrolled in the Accounting Program in the fall semester of 2002 because she wanted to complete her degree, which had been put on hold temporarily. She also wanted a degree in a profession that she enjoyed, and to attend a college that was close to home.

Cox said that her education has enabled her to perform her job responsibilities better. She credits her education for giving her information and resources that she can draw from when solving problems on the job.

Small class size at HCC gives students an opportunity to advance. "I liked the small class size and the ability to have a one-on-one professional relationship with the instructors. They get to know you personally and are able to assess your abilities so they can help you. The instructors I had were very instrumental in helping me understand the objectives for the course. They went the extra mile to be sure you understood what you were learning before they proceeded," said Cox.

When asked what advice she would give to others who are interested in enrolling in the accounting program she said, "You have to be receptive to want to learn, and not be shy about asking questions. This program is a very challenging and a rewarding one. With an accounting education you can go in many different areas in the business world. My education has helped me gain more confidence in my abilities in the work place."

Sondra Vann is an accounting graduate from 1994. Vann wanted to further her education in the math field. She enrolled at HCC in the fall of 1992, because it was a local college with affordable tuition.

Currently employed at Northampton County Department of Social Services as an Accounting Technician II, she works with Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable daily. She said that she started her career as a Processing Assistant in 1995 and was promoted to an Accounting Technician II in December 1996. She added that without her Associate in Applied Science degree in Accounting, she probably would not be where she is today.

"The teachers were wonderful at HCC," said Vann. "The class sizes were not overwhelming. My advisor guided me in making the correct decisions on taking classes when they were available without overloading me." Vann's advisor also assisted her in finding a job to work through her internship for her degree.

For those interested in the program, Vann said, "If you have a love for math as I did, HCC has a nice Accounting Program with excellent teachers. These days, you should have some type of college education, and HCC is a great college with affordable tuition."
